My name is Shahd Abusalama. I’m a Palestinian scholar, activist and artist, born and raised in Jabalia Refugee Camp, northern Gaza.
I have written for Declassified UK about how my family are experiencing what they describe as “the worst stage of genocide” on the ground in Gaza. Israel’s collective punishment of Palestinians leaves me at a loss for the right words to give justice to its gruesome and apocalyptic nature.
My dear neighbours, teachers and childhood friends refused to follow Israel’s orders to “head south” because of the 1948 Nakba. The uninterrupted violence that shaped their lives ever since taught them that “temporary” displacement can become a permanent reality.
The British government is complicit in the suffering of my uncles, aunts, cousins and their children. Yet voices like mine are rare in the mainstream media – as is accurate reporting of British involvement in these horrors. Declassified’s work is desperately needed now more than ever.
That’s why I’m asking you – the readers of Declassified – to please support fearless, independent journalism by chipping in to fund Declassified’s investigations going into 2025.
Declassified is seeking to raise £20,000 right now to help start the year ready to meet the challenges ahead. All donations – big or small – make a huge difference and will go directly towards their latest investigations.
Your donation will fund investigations into the role of the British government in the abuses and genocide in Gaza. Investigations which go on to provoke questions in Parliament, support protesters across the globe, and make real change.
Thank you – and please donate today if you can here.
In solidarity,
Shahd
