Labour Party staff opposed to Jeremy Corbyn compiled a secret blacklist to deny or revoke membership of the party to those criticising \u201cwar criminals\u201d, a leaked document shows.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scores of internal emails and WhatsApp messages show that party officials were hostile towards new members who came from Britain\u2019s anti-war movement. Some party officials also relished public criticism of Corbyn\u2019s support for nuclear disarmament and wanted him to blame immigration for a terrorist attack.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Labour saw its membership surge from 2015 to 2017 as anti-war activists rallied around the party\u2019s newly elected leader, veteran left-winger Corbyn, who pledged several foreign policies that would have challenged the British establishment had he become prime minister.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But an 860-page report titled \u201cThe work of the Labour Party\u2019s Governance and Legal Unit in relation to antisemitism, 2014-2019\u201d, reveals that party officials were engaged in factional feuds and even corrupt practices to undermine Corbyn.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018<\/span>Anti-war angry people\u2019<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Corbyn opposed the decision of then Labour prime minister Tony Blair to invade Iraq in 2003 and eventually won a leadership contest in 2015. His unexpected rise to the top triggered a backlash from unelected party officials and right-wing Labour MPs who remained loyal to Blair\u2019s pro-war policies, passing a vote of no confidence in Corbyn in June 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leaked report shows that hawkish figures in the party then used disciplinary powers to<\/span> expel Corbyn supporters from the membership \u2013 and stop more joining \u2013 to reduce his chances of winning another leadership ballot scheduled for later in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one case, party officials prepared for the publication of Sir John Chilcot\u2019s inquiry into the Iraq war by anticipating that Corbyn supporters would criticise Blair\u2019s legacy. A day before Chilcot\u2019s report was released on 6 July 2016, a Labour Party official asked a colleague in an email: \u201cwhat\u2019re we expecting post chilcot [sic] lots of abuse at pro war mps? an influx of anti-war angry people?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His colleague, a compliance officer, replied: \u201cI have no idea, but I can’t imagine it will be good.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chilcot report found that Blair had deliberately exaggerated to MPs the threat posed by Iraq when he sought parliamentary approval for the invasion. Corbyn responded to the report by describing the invasion as an \u201cact of military aggression\u201d which \u201cthe overwhelming weight of international legal opinion\u201d regarded as illegal.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Labour party staff then secretly added the term \u201cwar criminal\u201d, a common description of Blair, to an unofficial list of \u201cbanned phrases\u201d. People found to have used such terms \u2013 which also included \u201cundercover blairite\u201d and \u201cpseudo Tory\u201d \u2013 would have their membership denied or revoked.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials planned to scan through social media posts by new members after the Chilcot Inquiry was published to identify anyone using the proscribed terms.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vetting escalated on 18 August 2016 when a compliance officer stated that \u201ccalling someone a warmonger\u201d was \u201cgenerally \u2026 enough in itself\u201d to act against members.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although these manoeuvres failed to stop Corbyn winning the second leadership election in September 2016, the conduct of party staff during this period is back in focus after the internal review was leaked on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The review revealed the existence of the blacklist and warned that the party\u2019s legal unit \u201cdid not have any instruction or mandate\u201d from Labour\u2019s elected leaders \u201cto specifically search for \u2018abuse at pro war MPs\u2019 from \u2018anti-war angry people\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added: \u201cWe are not aware of any similar interest being displayed in abuse at \u2018anti-war MPs\u2019 or from \u2018angry pro-war people\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reacting to the revelations, Sam Tarry, Labour MP for Ilford South in east London, told <\/span>Declassified<\/span><\/i>: \u201cAny attempt to stifle debate in our party, be it through suspensions, purges or blacklisting, is completely unacceptable.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Labour Party is a broad church and a healthy difference of opinions is part and parcel of political life. Our members should be welcomed and not discouraged from holding their elected representatives to account.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why, when members have legitimate questions or concerns, in this case about involvement in life and death decisions such as war, their concerns should be listened to, taken on board and then challenged robustly if necessary, rather than silencing and ousting them from the Party. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHistory has shown us that failure to do so can lead to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, as we saw in Iraq.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corbyn stood down as Labour leader earlier this month and was replaced by a new team. Tarry commented: \u201cBoth the new Leader and Deputy Leader have been explicitly clear from the outset that they are determined to unify our party and end the factionalism and in-fighting that has dogged our movement for far too long.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018<\/span>She should pay in the reckoning\u2019<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The review also uncovered evidence of hostility from party officials towards elected Labour MPs who support unilateral nuclear disarmament.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corbyn had long been vice chair of Britain\u2019s Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (<\/span>CND<\/span><\/a>), putting him at odds with Labour\u2019s traditional policy which accepted the UK\u2019s Trident nuclear weapons system and favoured a more gradual multilateral approach to removing nuclear arsenals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These differences spilled out into the <\/span>open<\/span><\/a> in May 2017, ahead of the general election, when Labour\u2019s shadow defence secretary Nia Griffiths MP criticised Corbyn and his shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry MP in a media interview for their stance on nuclear disarmament.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a WhatsApp conversation, the Labour\u2019s Head of Press praised Griffiths as a \u201cbloody hero\u201d saying\u201d \u201cShe doesn\u2019t bullshit and she\u2019s just just stabbed corbyn and thornberry [sic].\u201d The official added that Thornberry was \u201cawful\u201d and \u201cshould pay in the reckonning [sic]\u201d if Corbyn lost the general election.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Normal people … blame immigration\u2019<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The election campaign was interrupted on 22 May 2017 when a British-Libyan suicide bomber killed 22 people at a music concert in Manchester.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his response to the attack, Corbyn criticised British <\/span>foreign policy<\/span><\/a> for increasing the threat of terrorism to the UK \u2014 one of the few times that a senior British politician had ever made that argument.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The connection between UK foreign policy and terrorism had been secretly identified by Britain\u2019s intelligence agencies before the invasion of Iraq, according to <\/span>documents<\/span><\/a> released by the Chilcot inquiry and <\/span>testimony<\/span><\/a> given by a former head of MI5.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, leaked WhatsApp messages show Corbyn\u2019s speech angered some hawkish Labour party staff who believed: \u201cIn the face of a terror attack normal people do not blame foreign intervention they blame immigration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A colleague responded: \u201cThe speech won\u2019t go down as badly as it deserves to thanks to the large groundswell of ill-informed opposition to all western interventions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When polling showed Corbyn\u2019s chances of winning the general election were actually increasing, a party official said they felt \u201csick\u201d and commented: \u201cI CANNOT WAIT to see [right-wing journalist] Andrew Neil rip him to pieces over it tonight\u201d, referring to Corbyn\u2019s speech.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 8 June 2017, when an exit poll for the general election predicted a hung parliament, one senior party official and opponent of Corbyn lamented his surprising performance and said it was the \u201copposite to what I had been working towards for the last couple of years!!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corbyn defied expectations and secured a hung parliament, coming within<\/span> 2,227<\/span><\/a> votes of becoming prime minister.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leaked report appears to show evidence that some of the most highly-paid Labour staffers wanted their party to lose the UK general election in 2017, and that campaign funds were secretly diverted towards candidates in safe seats who were personally favoured by party officials.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a <\/span>statement<\/span><\/a>, 29 MPs from the left of the Labour Party have said the leak \u201ccontains revelations of senior officials undermining the 2017 general election campaign\u201d and called for an investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Labour Party has said that it will investigate the contents of the leak, but also why it was passed to the media. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
