{"id":54815,"date":"2024-02-08T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/?p=54815"},"modified":"2024-02-12T09:43:08","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T09:43:08","slug":"uk-admits-nine-israeli-military-planes-have-visited-britain-since-gaza-bombing-began","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/uk-admits-nine-israeli-military-planes-have-visited-britain-since-gaza-bombing-began\/","title":{"rendered":"UK admits nine Israeli military planes have visited Britain since Gaza bombing began"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) has admitted for the first time that nine Israeli Air Force planes have taken off and landed in the UK since the bombing of Gaza began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The revelations come after <em>Declassified<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/exclusive-israeli-military-planes-have-landed-at-four-locations-in-britain-since-7-october\/\">revealed<\/a> last week that at least six Israeli military jets had arrived in the UK since October 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When contacted by us for that article, the MoD said it could give no details of any Israeli military flights within the UK.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe cannot comment on or provide information relating to foreign nations\u2019 military aircraft movements or operations,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But defence minister James Heappey <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-questions\/detail\/2024-02-01\/12729\">told parliament<\/a> on Tuesday: \u201cNine Israeli Air Force operated planes have taken off and landed from British territory since 7 October.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cThese figures are based on official requests for diplomatic flight clearance that have been submitted by the Israeli Embassy in London, subsequently cleared by Ministry of Defence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heappey was responding to questions from Alba MP Kenny MacAskill who has been trying for months to access information about Britain\u2019s largely opaque role in the Israeli assault on Gaza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Declassified<\/em> independently discovered Israeli military aircraft have landed in Glasgow, Birmingham as well as RAF bases in Suffolk and Oxfordshire since 7 October. But the type of Israeli military aircraft used for most of these flights remains unknown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"ecDOX46L\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Why Are Israeli War Planes Landing in Britain? Matt Kennard Investigates\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lONcBFlOTTs?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-complicity\"><strong>Complicity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is unclear why the MoD reversed its position on Israeli flights, and the department still refuses to give any details about US flights on British territory related to Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest information about Israeli military assets using Britain during its campaign may further implicate UK ministers in crimes against humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Court of Justice (ICJ) recently said it was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/01\/26\/1227078791\/icj-israel-genocide-gaza-palestinians-south-africa\">plausible<\/a>\u201d Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, and is investigating the case. Meanwhile, Nicaragua has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/24100946.icj-nicaragua-threatens-uk-court-action-genocide-gaza\/\">written<\/a> to Britain warning it that it is considering refering the country to the ICJ for complicity in genocide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenny MacAskill, the MP who asked the question in parliament, told <em>Declassified<\/em>: \u201cThese flights by the Israeli Air Force are not usual or regular. What are they carrying and to where? Along with surveillance flights, it seems the UK are getting closer than ever to Israel when much of the world is rightly shunning them for the genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MacAskill, a former Scottish justice secretary, added: \u201cUK citizens are being denied information on what they\u2019re government is up to and their media is refusing to investigate. It\u2019s time people were told what was being done supposedly in their name. It\u2019s a genocide and all and every government will be held to account.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"related-post\">\n  <h3 class=\"related-post-title bw-hide\">RELATED<\/h3>\n  <div class=\"related-post-body\">\n    <div class=\"related-post-image\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/?post_type=post&p=54655\" class=\"bw-hide\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/HEADER-6-1.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n      <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"related-post-description\">\n      <a class=\"post-link bw-hide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/?post_type=post&p=54655\"><h2>Exclusive: Israeli military planes have landed at four locations in...<\/h2><\/a>\n      <a class=\"bw-hide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/?post_type=post&p=54655\">READ MORE&nbsp;<i class=\"fa fa-angle-right\"><\/i><\/a>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-raf-flights-to-israel\"><strong>RAF flights to Israel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The MoD also admitted on Tuesday that it has flown close to 50 RAF operated aircraft to Israel since it began bombing Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-questions\/detail\/2024-02-01\/12732\">told parliament<\/a>: \u201cAs of 2 February 2024, a total of 48 RAF operated aircraft have flown to Israel since 7 October 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It added: \u201cThese flights included aircraft used to transport Ministers and senior officials conducting diplomatic engagements with Israel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Declassified<\/em> could find no similar flights in the two months before the Gaza campaign began.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of these flights are vast C-17 and A400 military transport aircraft which have gone from RAF Akrotiri, the sprawling British air base on Cyprus, to Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UK government <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-questions\/detail\/2023-11-28\/4277\">claims<\/a> the dozens of flights have \u201cprovided no lethal or military equipment other than medical supplies to Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it is possible the US and Israel are using bases in Britain to move weapons to Israel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked whether the US has used any RAF bases in the UK to transfer weapons to Israel since 7 October 2023, the MoD <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-questions\/detail\/2024-02-01\/12731\">responded<\/a> that it \u201cdoes not comment on Allies&#8217; operations\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has the same policy of secrecy about the nature of Israeli military flights in Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"related-post\">\n  <h3 class=\"related-post-title bw-hide\">RELATED<\/h3>\n  <div class=\"related-post-body\">\n    <div class=\"related-post-image\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/?post_type=post&p=54113\" class=\"bw-hide\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/HEADER-Cyprus.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n      <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"related-post-description\">\n      <a class=\"post-link bw-hide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/?post_type=post&p=54113\"><h2>Britain secretly sent 500 extra troops to Cyprus base being...<\/h2><\/a>\n      <a class=\"bw-hide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.declassifieduk.org\/?post_type=post&p=54113\">READ MORE&nbsp;<i class=\"fa fa-angle-right\"><\/i><\/a>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spy-missions\"><strong>Spy missions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another element of British support for Israel\u2019s military campaign in Gaza is intelligence sharing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A week after the 7 October Hamas attack, the UK government announced military units would be deployed to the eastern Mediterranean \u201cto support Israel, reinforce regional stability and prevent escalation\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The military package included P8 surveillance aircraft alongside other reconnaissance assets. The activities of these assets over the past four months remains shrouded in secrecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the MoD then<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/dec\/02\/uk-surveillance-aircraft-to-search-for-hamas-hostage-sites-in-israel-and-gaza\"> announced<\/a> on 2 December that it would begin surveillance flights over Gaza \u201cin support of the ongoing hostage rescue activity\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe safety of British nationals is our utmost priority,\u201d the department said. \u201cSurveillance aircraft will be unarmed, do not have a combat role, and will be tasked solely to locate hostages\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But asked how many spy missions the RAF has flown over Gaza, defence minister Heappey <a href=\"https:\/\/questions-statements.parliament.uk\/written-questions\/detail\/2024-02-01\/12733\">told parliament<\/a> on Tuesday: \u201cFor operational security reasons, I cannot comment on the specifics of this activity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But <em>Declassified<\/em> has found that the UK military has flown 65 surveillance missions over Gaza since 3 December.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flights have taken off from the UK\u2019s controversial air base on Cyprus, RAF Akrotiri, and averaged around one a day since the beginning of December.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British plane used is the Shadow R1, which is known as an intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) aircraft.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The British Ministry of Defence (MoD) has admitted for the first time that nine Israeli Air Force planes have taken off and landed in the UK since the bombing of Gaza began.
